Ericsson says China a worry - paper
STOCKHOLM, March 1 (Reuters) - Swedish telecoms group Ericsson said its single largest market was posing a problem for the group, Swedish newspaper Dagens Industri said on Monday. "China is a question mark right now," Johan Siberg, chief executive of Ericsson Consumer Products, told the newspaper. Ericsson also does not have a CDMA telephone on the market, in contrast to rivals Motorola and Nokia , which are both selling significant volumes of this type. The absence of a CDMA may create problems for Ericsson in the future, he acknowledged. "CDMA telephones can take half the volumes on the U.S. market. Clearly it's a worry if we are not found on the shelves then," Siberg told the newspaper. In 1996 Ericsson sued Qualcomm Inc , alleging its CDMA technology violated Ericsson patents. CDMA -- meaning Code Division Multiple Access -- is a U.S. phone standard developed by Qualcomm. Ericsson makes phones of the TDMA -- Time Division Multiple Access -- standard. Ericsson shares closed 6.5 crowns lower at 210.5 in a generally negative market. ((Abigail Schmelz, Stockholm newsroom, +46-8-700 1003, fax +46-8-211601, stockholm.newsroom@reuters.com)) |
