Pricing for Toshiba laptops with Intel/AMD choice of processors. My only comment is that on the surface at least, the AMD equipped laptop looks to be a great deal, I've never seen a laptop with a 14.1" TFT screen for $1899. It will be $800 less than an Intel equipped laptop with a smaller screen...

Toshiba notebooks offer choice of processors, price

Posted at 7:38 AM PT, Mar 1, 1999 Toshiba on Monday unveiled two almost identically configured systems that will test the mettle of IT managers, who will have to decide between one notebook that uses an Intel 333-MHz processor and costs about $800 more than the other system, which uses AMD's 333-MHz processor.
The company will use AMD's 333-MHz K6-2 processor in a $1,899 Satellite model 2545XCDT that includes 64MB of RAM, a 4.3GB hard drive, a 56Kbps modem, a 14.1-inch active matrix display, and a 24-speed CD-ROM drive.
At the same time, Toshiba is introducing the$2,699 Satellite 4060CDT, using a 333-MHz Intel Pentium II and featuring the same size hard drive, memory, CD-ROM drive, and modem performance as the AMD-powered model.
However, the Intel-powered Satellite 4060CDT uses only a 13.3-inch display instead of the 14.1-inch on the AMD-equipped Satellite 2545XCDT.
While most IT managers interviewed said that keeping a consistent model platform is of paramount importance, some smaller companies say an $800 price differential may be hard to ignore.
Toshiba is also offering a lower cost Satellite 2545XCDS, priced at $1,599, with the AMD 333-MHz K6-2 processor, 32MB of RAM, and a 13.3-inch dual-scan display.
The main distribution channels for the products are also dissimilar, with the Intel product targeted at the corporate market and sold through VARs, distributors, and dealers while the lower-priced AMD system is being sold through the consumer retail channel.
Toshiba also announced new Portege models -- the 3020CT and 3025CT -- in its ultra-thin lightweight notebook line. Both units are priced at $1,999, with the 3020CT selling through Toshiba's commercial channels and the 3025CT through its retail channel. Both units measure 2.9 pounds and are 3/4 inches thick. They will include an Intel 300-MHz Pentium processor with MMX, a 6.4GB hard drive, 32MB of RAM, a 56Kbps 3Com PC Card modem, and a 10.4-inch active matrix display.
All units are shipping this month.
