USA Today -- new signs of weakness in Japan

TOKYO (AP) - The dollar rose against the yen Tuesday on new signs of a weakening
economy in Japan. Japanese stocks tumbled.

The dollar bought 120.08 yen in late afternoon trading, up 0.96 yen from late Monday in
Tokyo and also above its New York level of 119.76 yen late Monday.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 300.69 points or 2.11%, closing at 13,921.06.

It was the Nikkei's lowest closing level since Feb. 9, when it finished at 13,902.66, and
the first time since Feb. 12 that it has closed below 14,000. On Monday, the index shed
145.79 points, or 1.01%.
