TOKYO — Fujitsu Ltd. is postponing construction of a front-end logic fabrication facility in Aizu-Wakamatsu. Instead, the Japanese chip maker will build at the site a back-end assembly and testing plant, which will open in late 2000.

Fujitsu said the decline of the global semiconductor market forced it to shelve the front-end fab. The company said it will continue to produce system LSI devices at its other fabs. The chips will be assembled and tested at the new Aizu-Wakamatsu plant.
