Washington, March 2 (Bloomberg) -- America Online Inc., the No. 1 online service, plans to build a $550 million computer center at a business park outside Manassas, Virginia, the Washington Post reported, citing unidentified company and state officials. The facility will house computing equipment for Dulles, Virginia-based AOL, including the latest Internet video technology, and will benefit from a $4 million tax break approved by the Virginia legislature, the Post said. Most of the $550 million will be used to cover the costs of investment in computing equipment, with few jobs created because the facility will mainly house equipment, the Post said, citing an unnamed state official.
AOL has more than 16 million subscribers worldwide and plans to expand this year into South America and to start a Chinese and English language service based in Hong Kong.
