QuentR: The big qualification is that this represents only 25% of the action. A huge fund might just waltz in, do a stock deal through a brokerage, and it would not even show up on the indicator. That said, I think you are right that as far as the indicator goes, the price does seem to move towards the buy or sell interest to make the trade.

I liked that earlier article which argued that there has been a net inflow of institutional funds since last Friday. It certainly makes sense to me that a lot of the selling has come from the retail clients of the brokerage houses which downgraded or reduced earnings expectations as well as the informed general public. Not many have read the small print, as have some of us on this thread.
