Vodafone hits 10 million users

NEW YORK—Vodafone Group plc, based in Berkshire, England,
announced it signed up its 10 millionth proportionate customer March 1.

Vodafone, which is acquiring AirTouch Communications Inc., said the
subscriber count includes 5.37 million customers in the United Kingdom
and 4.63 million proportional customers from its international operations.
The British wireless carrier has interests in mobile phone networks in 13
countries.

‘‘The spectacular growth of the mobile phone industry around the world
shows no signs of abating,'' said Chris Gent, chief executive officer of
Vodafone.

‘‘Ultimately, we expect penetration rates to reach 65 percent to 70
percent of the population in every sophisticated market in the developed
world, excluding new applications in media information and telemetry.''
