Centura First to Market with SQLBase Suite -- The Only Fully Encrypted Database That Protects Privacy and Facilitates E-Commerce
With Comprehensive Database Encryption and Tampering Prevention Features, Developers Can Now Protect Sensitive or Financial Information
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 2, 1999-- Centura® Software Corporation (Nasdaq:CNTR - news), announces the release of the SQLBase Suite, including SQLBase SafeGarde(TM), the first embedded database to offer developers full encryption and other tampering prevention measures.
The need for security is extremely high in applications like banking, insurance, financial, healthcare and public sectors, where there are requirements to protect sensitive data from internal and external tampering. With the advent of electronic commerce, mobile computing and the public Internet, security is an essential part of the design process.
Unlike traditional enterprise databases, embedded databases are more vulnerable to physical tampering of data files for several reasons. While the data file in a traditional enterprise database environment is often securely locked in a server room, embedded database files are often stored on an individual's PC, mobile devices (laptops, notebooks and PDAs) or distributed on unprotected servers in front of fire walls, increasing the risk of data tampering. Also, embedded databases are more likely to be found in small and medium size businesses. Unlike Fortune 1000 companies, these businesses do not have full-time database administrators and are often not aware of the risks associated with unauthorized access or alteration of data. End users rely on the software developer to protect the data.
''Information about your health, your finances or your Internet transactions needs to be stored and transmitted without fear of tampering or unauthorized access,'' explains Scott Broomfield, Centura's chief executive officer and president. ''The question is not whether you want to protect your data but how you can protect it easily, effectively and thoroughly. SQLBase SafeGarde is the only database offering end-to-end data protection: encrypting the database file whether it's stored on the server, being transferred over the network from one location to another, or being stored on a remote device. With SQLBase SafeGarde, there is no additional technology or learning needed to protect your valuable information.''
''SQLBase SafeGarde makes it easy for developers to add security to their applications,'' explains Joe Falcone, Centura's chief technology officer and senior vice president. ''Unlike the products offered by RSA and other security vendors that require the developer to write additional software to enable the encryption, SQLBase SafeGarde encrypts the data with no extra programming. Buying from security vendors who offer encryption libraries is like buying a tool. Even though you buy a hammer, you're still a long way from building the house,'' explains Falcone. ''That's the big difference between encryption libraries and the end-to-end security offered by SQLBase SafeGarde. In addition, SQLBase developers won't have to deal the burdensome license deals required by other security vendors. SQLBase SafeGarde is a one-step process for adding security within an application.''
''SQLBase has been an ideal database for the Enterprise Pharmacy Application we have deployed,'' says Chris Farias, president of Eastern Business Software. ''It has more than proved itself with our customer, Georgia Correctional Health Care, which provides health services to inmates in the state prison system. Georgia Correctional loves SQLBase's reliability given the little maintenance it requires. The encryption feature in SQLBase SafeGarde is an obvious benefit to secure sensitive medical record information, particularly as we build and deploy the next generation software for access via the Web.''
SQLBase SafeGarde sets new standards in data tampering prevention in four ways:
-- Privacy -- Database administrators (and applications) are able to instruct SQLBase SafeGarde to encrypt the entire content of individual database files, using either cryptographic, DES or triple DES encryption mechanisms. For information that is confidential, individuals can be assured their data is only accessible to authorized users.
-- Integrity -- SQLBase SafeGarde uses two different levels of page-level checksum features to assure that the data being viewed or processed is the same exact data that was previously created and/or updated by the application. The checksum feature creates and stores a unique ID when it creates or updates a record. When the database record is read, the checksum verifies that the data has not been tampered with or corrupted during data transmission, or by an intruder in some type of off-line editing.
-- Network Security -- To prevent tampering of data transmitted between clients and servers over a network, including the Internet, SQLBase SafeGarde allows administrators to specify encryption of data being transferred on the network, independent of network protocols.
-- Password Validation Delays -- To guard against 'trial-and-error' login attacks to a database, the server imposes increasingly long delays in responding to the user. Additional mechanisms exist to alert other users in the event of a protracted attack.
Centura has been granted government certification to export the 56-bit DES version of SQLBase SafeGarde to all institutions except those located in Cuba, Iran, Iraq, India, Pakistan, Libya, North Korea, Syria and Sudan. The 128-bit triple-DES version, SQLBase SafeGarde Max, has been granted certification for export to financial institutions, banks and insurance companies, and US subsidiaries (for internal use), located in 46 specific countries named in the regulations. This license demonstrates the willingness of the U.S. Department of Commerce to work with Centura to ensure that SQLBase is made available to organizations that need to protect their customers' financial information.
Pricing and Availability
SQLBase standard pricing starts at $395 for a single user, one copy. The price per seat decreases with multiples of the desktop and for multi-user server based pricing. SQLBase SafeGarde and SQLBase SafeGarde Max have both DES and Triple DES capability, depending on the needs and purpose of the end user. Additionally, Centura consultants are available to assist customers with security planning, design and implementation. About the SQLBase Suite
SQLBase is Centura's robust, small footprint embedded database, designed for integration with business application code for invisible deployment to end users. Unlike other full-featured, relational databases, developers do not have to hire a DBA to maintain their system. The SQLBase suite adds more embeddable features and increases the file size, allowing for unpartitioned database file sizes up to 512 Gigabytes. SQLBase provides developers an optimum solution to create, deploy and support single and multi-user applications requiring an embedded database for use on the desktop, on a Web server or in a distributed/mobile application. The SQLBase suite includes SQLBase Standard, SQLBase SafeGarde with 56-bit DES encryption and SQLBase SafeGarde Max with 128-bit triple-DES encryption. The SQLBase suite is developed specifically for Intel-based platforms and operating systems: Windows 3X, 95, 98 and NT, and Novell NetWare 5.0.
