Unless the speaker was someone from Boeing or Airbus I would discount what they are saying. I work in this industry everyday and have firsthand experience with both manufacturers. I can assure you that the company I fly for has both tested and certified that all of their BA and Airbus AC are fully Y2K compliant.

Like I stated earlier, all of the INS, GPS, and FMS sytems aboard modern generation AC are self contained. In addition, most of the systems run independently of each other, therefore the argument of one or many systems being dependent on each other is false.

Your notion, at least for AC, that all must work or much will fail is absolutely not true. If one system fails on an AC, there is a multitude of independent backup and failsafe systems. None are dependent of each other and none rely on a central information system.
