The Silkroad thread has been very lively recently. One person has attacked their technology as a possible sham, generating lots of interesting discussion.

I want to excerpt a couple of paragraphs from a post on that thread this afternoon, because there are parallels that brought MRVC's famed "shroud of secrecy" (my new term, coined on the spot) to mind. The poster is trying to show how Silkroad must act if it has truly revolutionary technology, and wants to get it to market without attracting undue attention - until they are ready.

Here are the two paragraphs:

"If SR works as advertised, they literally introduce a revolutionary major change to not only the WDM industry, but to the entire society. This kind if potential is similar to the landing of the aliens on the White House lawn. It is mind boggling. The aliens don't have anything we can use because they are hopelessly too far ahead for our stone knives and bear skins level of technology, but what SR seems to have is exactly what the world needs in communications.

In light of this potential can't you see that such a company must proceed as though it were a government black project? The company has to proceed in a slow and anomalous way without trying to seek venture capital overtly, without divulging much about the technology, without getting in the way of powerful and quashing corporations. They have to look bad. They have to quietly build what they have into sufficient mass, and they have to avoid the disaster of inviting involvement of a
greedy, litigious public. "
