As far as outsiders from telco go, Sam Ginn (the head of the Board committee doing the search) is in a position to know everyone. I believe he just pocketed major $ in the sale of Air Touch, where he was CEO. He also could emerge as a candidate, he lives in Hillsborough. Hackborn would also be a great candidate (as he was when he turned it down due to the lifestyle issues I believe). Other longshots might include ex-HPers like Wim Roelandts (Xlinx CEO), Dan Warmenhoven (Network Appliance CEO), Bob Frankenburg (ex-Novell CEO). Whoever they pick it will take a major $$$$ package to attract someone from the outside with all the opportunities now available to the connected few.
