M2 -
this is referring specifically to Intel-based workstations. DELL's numbers are not apples to apples, since DELL takes several high-end Optiplex configurations and calls them workstations. This would be like Compaq calling Deskpro 6000 'professional workstations'.

DELL does make real workstations now, but there is no way to get the real sales numbers since they are 'fudging' the category. Most people believe that DELL is #4 in the workstation business if we do a comparison of equivalent products - i.e. products with the special features that separate workstations from high performance desktops.

Servers are a different story. DELL has done a great job of going from nowhere to a tie for number 2, but they have a ways to go to close on Compaq.
