Hi Mkilloran,

Your point about self installation is a good one, but don't think the cable companies haven't already thought of it. Roadrunner came to my area last June, just now available in my town. I have an appointment for next week.

Originally, the installation cost $100. It consisted of the 'cable guy' for the cable modem and a tech installing the ethernet card and software. When I called for the installation appointment I was told the installation cost was $60 but that since I have ethernet(I have a Mac), that if I did the software installation it would be $30. They're running a half price special, so it'll only cost me $15. What a deal!

I assume they offer this option because a lot of the PC's they're doing installations on now have the ethernet card. I'm not sure how to eliminate the 'cable guy' part though. Its like a cable TV installation, they need somebody to do the grunt work. Although, to tell you the truth, I can't remember if I paid an installation charge for my cable TV.
