Just because patients with managed care coverage were prescribed a drug doesn't mean managed care paid for it. If patients wanted Viagra and it wasn't covered by their plan, they paid for it out of pocket. HMOs can't tell you what drugs your doctor can prescribe, what treatments you can get or what surgery you can have. But they can tell you which ones they will pay for.(g)
