I saw the pollen "stunt-story" in the UK press yesterday. She's not really a scientist, but an organic food lobbyist. And besides, she is only one, and this area has been researched by many others for many years. The organic food industry needs to put issues of pollen in context, since this issue has always been present. No one can guarantee each grain of pollen which enters a field is "perfect" by an arbitrary definition, even without GM. Once again, the real reason behind this is GM plants can produce healthier products which will compete with organics. In effect, the organic industry wants the world to subsidize them when they offer no real benefits compared to existing GMs. Would you buy the cheaper insect-protected GM or the more expensive organic?

(from the story)
The Soil Association, which promotes
organic food and is opposed to
genetic engineering, asked Dr
Emberlin to undertake this latest
research after the government's
refusal last summer to order the
destruction of a GM maize crop
bordering an organic farm in Devon.
