St. Louis, Missouri, March 2 (Bloomberg) -- Monsanto Co. executives, including Chairman and Chief Executive Robert Shapiro, are in preliminary merger talks with officials at DuPont Co., the New York Times reported, citing unidentified executives who say they've been briefed on the talks. The executives say Shapiro has been looking for a way for Monsanto to be bought by DuPont while retaining its character and habits. Shapiro and DuPont officials declined to comment, the paper said.
Monsanto last month agreed to sell its biodegradable plastics technology as part of its belt-tightening effort following the collapse last year of its planned merger with American Home Products Corp.
