You are taking the metaphor much too seriously... It is not merely a question of a supportive environment, but of the provision of a corporeal substance upon which to impress them... As for Bennett and Falwell, neither claims to fathom God. Bennett, although Catholic, claims to base himself primarily upon common morality, as discernible through philosophy, and Falwell claims to base himself upon the overt revelation contained in the Bible. If God exists, it is credible that he would reveal His will in some manner.
