It takes a little getting used to, but if you look at what are the characteristics which makes things generally thought to be alive different from things which are not (such as crystals or snowflakes) what you come up with is the aquisition and preservation of information. On earth the living and non-living share chemistry. The difference is due to information encoded and preserved. Each segment of information by itself would not be considered alive, but when they combine and are sifted by differential survival, they become an entity which can improve it's own chance of survival. Chemistry is the mechanism for corporeal life, while changing potentials at brain synapses are the mechanism for most memes.

As for Bennett, his idea of common morality is that everyone should accept what he thinks is right and wrong as common. He still can't see the incongruity of demanding drug users just quit cold turkey while he couldn't shake his two pack cigarette habit and thought there was some kind of difference.

And Falwell, he's a sicko who gets his amusement by claiming power and authority with an I know something you don't know kind of mystisism and then say's "But it's all right here in this book". He then threatens the weak minded with hurricanes, floods, and the comming apocolypse.
