The theme I get out of Bennett's work is that he thinks we shouldn't thoughtlessly toss our (up till recently ) commonly held moral ideals into the dumpster. They are our heritage passed down by generations of Americans who, while admittedly did not live up to them, were never the less well served by them.

The key word is thoughtlessly. Someone should be pointing out that we really are giving something up here and it is incumbent one those who are pushing the new morality to prove that we are gaining something better.
