But the main thing is that if God exists, it is at least plausible that He has revealed Himself in Scripture.
Why is there any reason to think God has revealed himself through some particular text instead of say the Archie comic books. The only reason I can think of is that men like Falwell have studied the twists and turns of the bible and want all moral issues based on a document where they can more easily pull the selected passages that support whatever position he is pushing. (I realize it is helpful to Falwell that the authors of the bible are way back in time while we could perhaps write the author of Archie and ask him what he meant).
Falwell's scheme of control is no differnet than was Charles Manson's use of vague phrasing in the Beatles White Album to push his point of view. It matters not that he was not to first to stumble upon this con.
