Hey bp, I think to answer your question we have to think about teenage psychology. The people buying playstations are mostly teenagers (with their parents' money). Teenagers are more on top of cutting-edge tech than you and I are. BUT they could care less about what's coming out a year from now, when they want something now. If their friends have it and they want it, they want it NOW. Not next year.

As a grizzled adult, I want a cutting-edge computer to replace my aging 200Mhz PI. However, I am patient and will wait until the PIII's come with Rambus. No teenager would ever wait. Most simply haven't developed their patience skills yet.

So Sony's announcement won't do anything to stall current sales, IMO.
