Keep that up and Jesse Jackson may hire you as a speechwriter... The problem with government is that it does not have sufficient accountability for its actions. In trying to explain to MacCoy why capitalism was better than socialism (on another thread), one of the biggest points I made was that those who own something have an incentive to keep it up and put it to productive purposes. They feel the consequences of their actions (or lack thereof) more or less directly. In government, it is hard to assign clear responsibility, and to ensure that superior performance is rewarded, and malfeasance is punished. The larger the government, the less responsive it is to its constituents, the easier it is to obscure responsibility, and the harder it is to monitor performance. Thus, it is indeed preferable to keep governmental action as local as is feasible, and to streamline larger governmental units. Additionally, as I have said, I agree that transmitting values is not primarily the governments task. But I think that it is impossible to pretend neutrality, and that all of our institutions ought to reflect commonly agreed upon standards of decency.
