That is one of EMC's hole cards. But right now, as IBM and CPQ drive the trend to SANs, independence looks a lot like proprietary. And since right now all of the SAN architectures are proprietary in the sense that solid standards are years away, many large customers are betting that it is better to get a vendor who will "make it work". There has been a fair amount of press on this in the last few months.

So the "independent" label could turn into a millstone if it gets equated with "non-standard".

Also the numbers talk. EMC is a pure multivendor play. The storage business of IBM and CPQ is buried in broader product divisions. Still, both IBM and CPQ have outgrown EMC in this space by more than 2:1 for several years. As SANs become more prevalent these numbers will become more accessible and at that point I think EMC will be in trouble.
