Barb- The server has been screwy, but I seem to be back in. Yes, you cannot give people self-respect by passing a law. I was referring to assertion that the only grounds upon which one could oppose prostitution were religious. You can think it is degrading without thinking that sex, even premarital sex, is so, on the grounds that there is too close an association between the intimacy of sex and personal identity, and therefore to hire out one's body in that circumstance is not the same as hiring out as a day labor. You can think that the degradation involved is so intrinsic that you do not want anyone misled about the nature of prostitution, and therefore you do not want to treat it as any other business. And you can think that it encourages the objectification of women, and is therefore injurious to their standing in society. As I said earlier, reasonable people may disagree, but I want to argue the con as strongly as I can.
