Oh yes. US 51. That road was a curse between Rockford and Bloomington. I remember very well that wondrous time back in the early '70s when the State of Illinois was trying to decide whether to build an East-West freeway connecting Chicago with Rock Island or to build a North-South freeway connecting Rockford and Bloomington and the brilliant decision was to go East-West and they built what is now I-88 (back then it was Illinois 5). A beautiful toll road that was hardly ever used. We used to drive it to get to Aurora or Naperville from my home town. We'd pick it up just south of Rochelle and it went past DeKalb, Sycamore, etc. Anyway, no traffic to speak of.

All the while, US 51 was packed to the gills with tractor-trailers and other slow moving vehicles and when I went to college at ISU it would take 2-1/2 hours to drive the 110 or so miles to Normal. All on that terrible 51. Through all those small towns. Was helped one time by a nice farmer in Hudson when I had car trouble late one night about 20 years ago.

Then, wonders of wonders, money was found to build 39. Cut the trip down to about an hour and 45 minutes. Of course, it took 10 years to complete it.
