page 1, part 1: ULTRAPHONICS OF NORTH AMERICA, INC. HISTORY
At the request of the United States Army,an engineer from Stuttgart, Germany was commissioned to develop a hand held tool that could evaluate track bearings on military tanks. The army requested that the devise be able to detect bearing wear of the carriage, in a predictive fashion, to avoid catastrophic damage to other components of the tank. In 1987, that engineer succeeded when he developed an ultrasound wave receiver with a center frequency of 40,000 hertz (humans hear at approximately 8,000 to 10,000 hertz). The tool was designed on the principal that a bearing emits an ultrasound wave in the 36,000 to 44,000 hertz range. Once that operating frequency range was isolated, the engineer set out to translate that ultrasound frequency into a sound that the human ear could easily recognize and identify. The precursor to the Ultraphonic Detector had been born and a company established. To better serve their American military customers, the newly founded German company established offices in Alanta, Georgia.
