Toy, IBM did not have Bill Gates as the CEO. Think about it. IBM was dominant for years and years. MSFT came up in a flash to have the largest market cap in the World.
The only company with even a chance appears to be AOL --not Sunw, not the Linux O/S, not Apple, not IBM, (not Novell---that is funny).
AOL won't compete with MSFT in most areas anyways.
However, AOL has lots of competition too. I can imagine the days of the $5 per month internet connections or even free---due to cut throat competition. No wonder AT&T and AOL rumors started last week. If they don't join forces, the biz becomes very fragmented---that is they cannot become "the next Microsoft". That is only possible since AT&T has a hold of cable for now. If cable is opened up, forget it.
Sorry to tell you this but they only have a slim chance. Even if successfull, they won't be competing with Microsoft. If MSFT does not get out of the internet service provider business, then I expect to see aggressive marketing (just like Prodigy)---cheap on line access.
