Lucent aims to serve cable TV market

March 3, 1999 06:27 PM
NEW YORK, March 3 (Reuters) - Lucent Technologies Inc, the world's largest maker of equipment for phone companies, said it is studying ways to serve the cable television market.

Lucent currently does not have much of a presence in providing equipment for cable companies but plans over the next several months to explore ways to serve that market.

"We have an extremely active effort underway to evaluate how we should play with traditional cable companies, " said Nina Aversano, president of Lucent's North American Global Service Provider business.

"It's a market we can't ignore. We know we need to play there," Aversano said at the Bloomberg Fourth Annual Telecom Conference.

Aversano also said Lucent expects to see continued strong earnings and revenue growth.

"We've had a spectacular run and it ain't over yet. We've had 12 straight record-breaking quarters and we see this as just the beginning," she said.

Lucent, which was spun-off from AT&T Corp. T in 1996 said it continues to see strong demand for equipment among phone companies as they continue to spend money to upgrade their networks to handle the explosion in voice and data traffic.
