Oh gee, its not all that mysterious, Jill. Can't speak for all the longs, but many originally purchased in the 2s or lower. At that time revenues were twice those of present, margins were spectacular, they were selling plenty of DCRs to the government. 19mm sales were doubling year over year -albeit from a small level- and there was hope that they would continue to do so. They had a healthy revenue stream. The CEO had just made a 1.7 million dollar insider purchase. They were cleaning up their balance sheet rapidly. They had a huge patent portfolio that seemed uniquely suited to the rapidly approaching digital age. A promising project in keepered media that promised huge returns (hundreds of millions potentially) from about a 9 million dollar investment. And a very promising lawsuit against Mitsubishi that would return little money initially, but could have opened an entirely new and very large market ...TV receivers ...to Ampex. And while the stock soared to over 15, its PE never got remotely close to tech stock lala land. Many longs traded some. Many like Mike and Al had the sense to bail completely. Many hard headed ones like me hung on and even bought more when despair got the deepest.
What happened is that virtually everything went wrong for a couple years. And by the time we knew KM was a goner they had begun their new acquisition strategy and it looked promising. Later the price, due to tax loss selling and index fund selling and general panic, went so low that it seemed foolish to sell. Now many of us assume there is substantial value in their flexible holding company strategy for early entry into web video delivery. And we assume there is potentially terrific value in a TVontheWeb IPO ....and that many will play AXC as a backdoor to that value when and if it all begins to happen.
May happen. May not happen. Doubt if this little trickle of a steady decline has any factual bearing on whether it will happen or not.
As for me I appreciate the time people take to contribute here
