I just read a little tidbit about the Merced in the 3/1 Information Week.

"Intel officials at the conference [Intel Developers Forum in Palm Springs, Ca] also showed a prototype of the upcoming Merced processor for 64-bit servers and workstations, due in mid-2000. Intel hasn't disclosed Merced's speed, but analysts estimate it will be as high as 800 MHz. Intel officials say a second-generation 64-bit chip called McKinley, due in late 2001, will double Merced's performance."

So, Intel delayed the project and now they have the replacement lined up. Just over one year of "marketability" for the Merced before it's outdate. I guess that's longer than most computer products...

I wonder who, if anyone, is working with Intel on the McKinley.
