I think it is funny you mention ADA. I think it is a perfect example. At that time EVERYONE was convinced that Federal Goverment support of ADA would make it the next language of choice. What happened? Pascal, through Borland's persistence, gained as much support as Java has now. What happened?
This argument is really insignificant. Unlike the days of old, languages today come and go. There are so damned many languages out there it is tough to make a commitment to one. But really widespread change does not happen overnight. That's why there is so much COBOL still out there. People who have made commitments to C, C++, and database languages are not going to jump ship & move to Java yet.
Anyway, I'm out of time for debating this. We'll just have to wait & see what heppens. But believe me, Java is not the ultimate in languages. There will be new languages that are much bigger and better. If you think that Java is THE language for the next 10 years, then I would have to say you're being nearsighted about it. Over the next ten years lots of languages will come and go, and Java may be one of them.
