IBM, Dell To Announce Tech Pact

NEW YORK (Reuters) - International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM - news) and Dell Computer Corp. (Nasdaq:DELL - news), the world's largest and fastest-growing computer makers, respectively, said they would announce a multibillion-dollar technology pact later Thursday.

Industry sources said the deal would not involve a merger or acquisition, the sale of part of either company, or any equity stake. The sources provided no further details.

In a statement, the companies said they would hold a news conference here at 10 a.m. EST to unveil ''the largest agreement of its kind in the information technology industry.''

A spokesman for IBM declined to comment. Dell spokesmen were not immediately available.

The Wall Street Journal speculated that the deal could involve IBM providing computer services to Dell, the leading direct seller of computers and a company with a largely corporate customer base.

Dell has pledged to develop a stronger set of computer services offerings in order to compete more effectively with other computer makers with well-developed services arms, such as Compaq Computer Corp. (NYSE:CPQ - news) and Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE:HWP - news)
