BIG NEWS WE WERE WAITING FOR! FCC APPROVES "GRAND ALLIANCE" PLAN FOR DIGITAL TV.
(foloowing is a summary of the article I read)
The FCC decided to approve the Grand Alliance proposal for HDTV. The Grand Alliance is made up of AT+T, General Instruments, MIT, Phillips, David Sarnoff Research Center, Thomson consumer Electronics, and Zenith Electronics.
In approving the Grand Alliance proposal, the FCC rejected a proposal from an alliance made up of Apple, Compaq and Microsoft. A spokesman from Apple answered questions for the losing team and he was very upset.
In making this decision the FCC has favored the creation of a standard for HDTV, thus avoiding consumers buying products which might later become obsolete, such as the Betamax video recorder.
