The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, March 4, edition that Imax is acquiring a stake in
Mainframe Entertainment, as part of its effort to secure a pipeline of movies for its global
network of large-format screens. The Globe's Brian Milner writes that Imax will spend
$16-million to acquire about 15 per cent of the equity and senior convertible debt in
Mainframe Entertainment, a small studio best known for its ReBoot animated series. Other
new investors, which Mainframe would not name, will pump an additional $10-million into the
company. Once the new financing is completed, Imax will be the largest shareholder in
Mainframe. And if it converts the five-year senior debentures, Imax will own 24 per cent of
Mainframe stock. The two companies have also agreed to form a joint venture to co-finance
and co-produce 3-D animated films for the Imax format and other markets, starting with three
already in development, Gulliver's Travels, The Pied Piper and Pandora's Box.
