LOL bdog, I have often wondered where they came up with that name. It does sound evil.

The term "daemon" in the context of a program for you is unix-based. (Maybe earlier, but the first time I ever heard it used like this was on the Unix OS).

I've also read on other sites that the old definition of a "daemon" (opposed to "demon") was a "good" version of a demon (a fairie, sprite, etc.); doing things for you without your explicit knowledge or consent, which seems to blend well with what daemon programs typically do.
