It's getting harder and harder to overlook the Zip if you visit a computer store at all these days. There seems to be Zip drives by Iomega and Epson, and zip discs by Iomega and Fuji in every store. Marketing on TV seem more and more noticeable (although it's true that I would probably notice an Iomega ad before a non-stockholder does).

I have to disagree with you on the Zip being a phenomenon among techies. The Zip is actually anti-tech. It is made very, very simply and inexpensively (not cheaply). Many techies who have conversed on these threads seem to prefer the Syquest EZ135 because it's faster and somewhat higher density than the Zip. Unfortunately, for Syquest, their unit just isn't as rugged. You see, the Zip is perfect for klutzes. Iomega's success is being guided by a tremendously competent management team, excellent marketing (Iomega started with true market research and now is becoming more prominent on the tube), very rugged and inexpensive hardware; and, the products they make are kind of cute!

The coming competitors had better have their acts together when they take on Iomega - they're in for a tough ride against the company that has reinvented the portable storage market.
