The Bombay Company, Inc. Announces February
Sales

FORT WORTH, Texas, March 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The Bombay Company, Inc. (NYSE: BBA - news) reported today that
total sales for the four week period ended February 27, 1999 decreased 1% to $22.0 million compared to $22.3 million for
the corresponding period of the prior year. Same store sales for Bombay stores in existence for more than one year also
decreased 3%.

Robert S. Jackson, Chief Executive Officer, stated, ''Early February sales reflected the continued soft winter clearance sales,
particularly with respect to furniture sales where our levels of clearance and special purchase inventory were lower than last
year. Our furniture mailer, which was our primary marketing vehicle during the month, did not drive sufficient sales to offset
the delayed timing of our spring catalogue which arrives in homes this week. We were encouraged by the improvement in
trends as the month progressed and new spring product arrived in stores. Our accessory offerings have been very well
received and the test quantities of new furniture also showed promise. Based upon the early readings, we expect to return to
positive same store sales gains for the March and April spring marketing periods.''

The Bombay Company, Inc. is a specialty retailer marketing classic and traditional furniture, prints and accessories through a
network of 412 Bombay stores and its mail order operations in the United States and Canada as well as over the Internet at
www.bombayco.com.
