Joe,

Generally speaking, a "Blue Chip" stock refers to the stock of a well known, profitable company with a large market capitalization (share price x shares outstanding). They usually have dominant or large market share in their core businesses and their products are typically household names. You will usually find blue chips among the major market indices, such as the Dow Jones Industrials, S&P indices and the NASDAQ 100.
