NYMEX crude moves above $13 early on short covers

NEW YORK, March 4 (Reuters) - Front month crude oil futures on the New York Mercantile Exchange rose above $13 a barrel in early trade Thursday on short covering, after opening lower in a brief followthrough of overnight selling, traders said.

At 1015 EST/1515 GMT, NYMEX April crude was up 20 cents at $13.13 a barrel, after hitting an intraday high of $13.20. The contract has traded as low as $12.82.

"The front month's next target could be $13.25," said Marcy Forsyth, a trader at Refco Energy Group in New York. The front month last hit an intraday high of $13.25 on Jan. 7.
