Straight From the Workhorse's Mouth Thu Mar 4 1999
Winston Churchill wisely said,''Some view private enterprise as a predatory animal to be shot, others look on it as a cow to be milked, but a few see it as a sturdy horse pulling a wagon.'' In his convincing article on the MSNBC site, Frank J. Fahrenkopf, Jr., President of the American Gaming Association, gives many good cost and benefit arguments why the casino gaming industry should be accepted as a diligent ''workhorse for the American economy.'' Although still feared and loathed by some, the industry has shown its ability to create good jobs, reduce welfare dependency, and generate needed tax revenue for education, public safety, and infrastructure in many US communities; from Tunica, Miss. to Joliet, Ill. Besides the economic benefits, Fahrenkopf adds that the vast majority of Americans support gaming as a form of adult entertainment. Win or lose, most people simply enjoy horsing around.
