The Siemens story is old news. Here's an excerpt from today's Times:

"Siemens intends to release the new technology, called the Fingertip Sensor, at the Cebit '99 trade show, scheduled for March 18 in Hanover, Germany.

"The sensor is a specially designed computer chip that has been programmed to identify an individual's fingerprint and use it as a de facto password."

Introducing a chip is not at the same level as introducing a scanner. For example, IDX could decide at any time to incorporate a new chip in one of their scanner lines, and the semiconductor company would simply be a supplier. The scanners include a lot of hardware (and software) beyond a chip.

Further, the story goes on to say that Siemens will sell the chip to OEMs for $35 -- not much less than the IDT scanner, which is probably available for $45 to $50 per unit.
