Hi Nelson,

I am not talking of an actual merger. I am simply viewing a synergistic relationship between a hi tech company (IBM) and an assembly/marketing powerhouse (Dell). The arrangement truly leverages the strengths of each company and minimizes their weaknesses. From Dell's perspective, the weakness has always been their absence in high computing and storage gear. IBM's weakness has been marketing (over the past several years their top-line growth has been anemic), but they are a leader in the development of many technologies.

Now, imagine what happens if IBM figures out how to minimize capital outlays by adapting Dell's virtual integration model to its own component manufacturing systems and relies on Dell for marketing, sales, assembly, and distribution, and then IBM becomes involved once again at the customer service end.

As far as IBM being Big Blue, I think that this deal is evidence of the fact that Gerstner is dissatisfied with IBM's efforts and is looking for something short of an acquisition to turn top-line growth around.

TTFN,
CTC
