Check out Gottfried's first link from his post a few messages ago, gives the T-bond's high, low and close yield for every year between 1800 and 1998 (and other links as well: siliconinvestor.com. Pretty interesting stuff, gives a perspective on yields. Personally, I had no idea that the 1970s and 1980s were such an aberration, I had just erroneously presumed that past booms and busts, especially in the 19th century, had high yields as well. Here are the yields yields betweeen 1931 and 1944 (sorry, I'm not going to spend the time to pretty up the table, but I think you get the idea):
