The current paradigm is that technology improves healthcare. Therefore devices that can potentially keep people alive are good. However, no one thought about the costs involved or the clinical outcomes of that technology. For example, it is actually unclear whether angioplasty is better than medications. I think that a lot of insurance companies are run by corporate suits who have decided to pay for the devices (although below market cost) just for the prestige factor or because if they don't, then the patients will complain. It is important to realize that the economy has finite resources. Did you know that 30% of people in any given HMO will change HMO on a year to year basis? You have a lot of fickle people out there.
