In general, without the TCA, a patient faces almost certain death. Unfortunately, keeping someone alive also costs lots of money. Money that the US government and HMO's and payors don't have. After the financial problems with the dialysis program (from 1965 Medicare), no policy maker wants to foot the bill for hundreds of people being artificially kept alive on a machine that may run hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to maintain. We just don't have the money for that. We are already spending more money on healthcare than on defense.

I am always skeptical of new reports and press releases. These are done to sell newspapers, make headlines, or show a company in the best light possible. Your story seems to be one of "human interest". It makes us feel good.
