Each package requires more fuel to deliver to a home than to a supermarket.

I didn't know Amazon was in the business of selling lettuce, and thus competing with supermarkets...

Please do tell at what level of sales will there be profits?

At the level of sales they are such a household name and at the level of site offerings that they can raise their prices without loosing too many customers.
