Jody,

Intel is working on the McKinley. Nobody else.

HP's direct involvement in Merced work ended a while ago, and Intel is finishing up on their own.

1-2 years is typical lifecycle for a microprocessor design before the first major enhancement comes along. McKinley is not as radical a change as Merced. More like Merced v2.0, capitalizing on all the Merced technology and including many new features and probably built on a copper interconnect. In all likelihood McKinley will be marketed as "Merced II" or some such. (The actual product name for Merced has not been announced. Merced is an internal project name, just as Deschutes, Katmai, Klamath, and others have been project names for various Pentium flavors over the past couple of years.)
