I suspect that the reason I got out of the Catholic thing so easily was that my mother insisted on driving an hour each way to hear the mass said in Latin. This had three results: first, I grew to loathe the entire affair, since it took up the entire Sunday morning, second, I avoided most of the liturgy, since my parents refused to translate and I couldn't understand a word of it, and third, I became acquainted with the tools of rational discourse, since the two hours of driving were invariably occupied by arguments over the necessity of attending mass. Could have come off worse, I suppose, but the loss of Sunday morning was a pretty grim prospect. I hated school almost as much as I hated church, and the theft of one fourth of my weekend seemed a pretty grave issue at the time. I think it probably still would.
