I like FVWM because it is simple and fast. I like WindowMaker better, because it is also simple and fast... and has more features. Enlightenment is fast if you don't use the shaped extensions on your window decorations. (extreme example: blevins.simplenet.com All of these Window Managers allow you to drag windows between virtual screens.

I don't see any conflict between Gnome and <insert favorite WN here>. Gnome should be able to work with any of these WMs, and is only needed if you want the extra shit that Gnome provides. I think having icons on the desktop to launch programs is stupid. (but I do like Doc apps). I like being able to use icons on the desktop as a "scratch" directory for files I am working on, and because you can have multiple desktops, then you can organize your scratch files just like you do your windows (and with related windows).
