Mindmeld,

One issue that may not have been considered here is that because Lucent was still in the 2 year waiting period before having the ability to take advantage or pooling of interests, they (although not advisedly) spent in the area of 2 billion in cash on yurie (1 billion) and a few start-ups that I could not name right now. Now that they are on the same playing field and can take advantage of the same tax laws (at least for now), these numbers are not likely to be so skewed. Based on next years earnings estimates, CSCO looks to add $2.88 billion (1.78 X 1.58 million shares) while LU looks to add $3.67 billion based on 2.78 X 1.32 billion shares. I got these numbers from microsoft investor. Both companies are obviously highly profitable. Also, based on earnings for 2000, CSCO is estimated to grow 24% vs Lu 20.55%. this is assuming status quo for both companies though recent reports estimate that ASND could add as much as .12/share which works out to an additional 4.3%. The earnings growth rates here seem to be essentially identical. this seems to present a case to own them both, LU at the lower PE because they do not yet have the 8 year track record and CSCO at the higher PE because they do. Just a thought.
